Dear readers, welcome to our first Wednesday edition of the events newsletter! Wednesdays seem like the perfect day of the week to start planning out your week ahead.

A quick peek at the next couple of weeks

🧡 National Day for Truth and Reconciliation: There are dozens of events across the city over the week from powwows to panels to “Orange Shirt Day” so plan ahead. Sept 30 and beyond at various locations.

🐎 Oktoberfest at Spruce Meadows: The Oktoberfest Tournament welcomes horses and riders to the Spruce Meadows Equi-Plex. No tickets are required for this tournament. Oct 2-6 at Spruce Meadows.

🐅 Calgary Zoo Wild After Hours: Tigers: Immerse yourself in the secret world of the tigers at this adults-only exclusive after-hours viewing, followed by a delicious four-course meal. The evening also includes a presentation from the dedicated staff who care for them. Oct 5-12 at The Calgary Zoo Wilder Institute.

📚️ Wordfest Presents Imaginarium: Savour your favourite returning authors. Sample breakout stars. Devour the intimate, inspired pairings. Relish the variety and talk shows, storytelling and poetry events, and the return of Literary Death Match. Oct 16-21 at various locations.

🎭️ Broadway Across Canada’s Beetlejuice: Tickets just went on sale for what is going to be a very popular Broadway event right here so snap up yours before it’s too late. Based on Tim Burton’s beloved film, this hilarious musical tells the story of Lydia Deetz, an unusual teenager whose whole life changes when she meets a demon with a thing for stripes. Jan 7-12 at the Jubilee.

Wednesday-Thursday | Bow Valley Square | 9am-3pm

This annual market features Alberta-based companies who have won or been contenders for the Made In Alberta Awards and Calgarians are invited to explore the variety of creations at this two-day event that’s sponsored by Oxford Properties and aims to connect the community with local artisans.  [Free to attend]

Thursday until Saturday | Victoria Park | At night

Night Light is a 3-night celebration of curated light, art, and performance that will transform the Victoria Park community into an incredible display of light and art.

Saturday | ATCO Field at Spruce Meadows | 5pm

Don’t miss out on the family-friendly action as Cavalry FC takes on Vancouver FC at ATCO Field for their second last home match of the season.

Mom's Night in Nature | Wednesday | 6:30-8:30pm

Happening in Edworthy Park and designed for the busy mom, this event aims to connect individuals with nature and each other through nature-based art activities, games, a campfire and more where proceeds go towards the Send a Kid to Camp Fund. [$23]

2024 Curling Canada Pointsbet Invitational | Wednesday-Sunday | Various times

Gear up for the excitement of the 2024 Curling Canada Pointsbet Invitational as 16 men’s and 16 women’s teams from Canada vie for victory in a thrilling sudden-death single-knockout format.

Attend the So Long Summer Series presented by BARCS where attendees can bring their furry friend along to enjoy treats from MIMI & SOSO, personalized nail trimming services, and live music while meeting adoptable dogs who are searching for their fur-ever home.  [Free to attend]

Enjoy an evening of celebration with Mike Vernon and Grant Fuhr where attendees can expect incredible food, memorabilia auctions, fantastic entertainment and a panel discussion hosted by Kelly Hrudey.  [$475]

'Ori Tahiti Tahitian Dance Class | Thursday | 6:30-7:30pm

The CommunityWise Resource Centre is excited to host an evening focused on learning about the culture, history and traditional dance moves of Ori Tahiti in a class designed for all experience levels. [$6]

Cherry Tree Lane Toys is excited to host a workshop designed for ages 8 and up where PAPÚUL Studios will be guiding participants through creating their own Luchadores puppet complete with their own unique outfit that comes to life with a simple mechanical system. [$23]

The 5th Moonlit Market is happening at Idle Eyes Collective and Loveyland Studios and will feature over 19 artists, vintage sellers, and tattoo artists who are eager to connect with the community at this all-ages event. [Free admission]

The Lougheed House is proud to present a collaboration with artists from the Wâsakâmapiwak Collective to create an exciting exhibit that highlights the diverse Indigenous perspective happening until November 17. Attend the Launch Party and Fashion Show for free while enjoying snacks and drinks. [RSVP free]

The University of Calgary is excited to present a world-class vocal duo who will delight audiences with their rhythmic chemistry and are excited to play live for Calgarians. [$19 - $26]

This all ages event happening at the Acadia Rec Complex is designed for toy enthusiasts and kids alike and features antique and collectible toys and dolls along with accessories, die cast cars, beanies, books and so much more to explore and shop. [Free]

The Deerfoot Inn & Casino is hosting the dance party of the year featuring Spice Girls tribute band WANNABE alongside talented drag performers such as Roxxxy Andrews and Nearah Nuff and hosted by Calgary’s own Karla Marx. [Starting at $32]

Support local artists and the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 15 in Cochrane at their year end Art Auction & Fundraiser where attendees can experience the high energy of a live auction while mingling with fellow enthusiasts and enjoying music and beers. [Free to attend]

Russell Howard Live | Sunday | 5pm

The international hit and UK born comedian Russell Howard comes to MacEwan Hall as part of his Canadian tour where Calgarians can experience the hilarity of Howard’s humour for themselves. [$43]

Studio Bell presents Speak Up! | Monday | 10am-5pm

In recognition of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, Studio Bell is offering free admission with the goal of inviting the public to recognize and reflect on the lasting legacy of residential schools and honouring the stories of Indigenous people while listening and learning from respected knowledge keeper of Blackfoot culture, Elder Eldon Weasel Child. [Free]

Gather some art supplies and join Panel One Comics Society at the Palomino Smokehouse for an evening of Zine Making where attendees will create a one-page Halloween themed comic that will be published online. [Free with RSVP]

The Flames host the Seattle Kraken in a pre-season game as the home team fine tunes its roster ahead of the regular season.

Chandelier Club Burlesque | Tuesday | 9pm

Classic long-form burlesque in the heart of historic Inglewood at the Attic Bar and Stage.

#YYCBlockParty | Until Sept 26 | Deerfoot City

There’s a summer long party at Deerfoot City and there’s still plenty of fun to be had! Dust off your roller skates and let the good times roll at the fourth annual #YYCBlockParty, featuring a 100-foot outdoor roller rink amongst a giant street mural—and so much more.

Fly through a technicolour nebula, kick up dust on the moon, and witness Saturn’s rings up close in this out-of-this-world immersive experience. Explore the galaxy through the James Webb telescope with this unique space exploration encounter.

Sidney Bruhl is a successful writer of Broadway mystery plays but is struggling to live up to his own reputation. A possible break in his fortunes occurs when he receives a script from a student and he hatches a sinister plan. What Sidney doesn’t know, is his student has some surprise plot points of his own up his sleeve.

From Me to You: The Beatles in Canada 1964-1966 | Until Jan 5 | National Music Centre

A nostalgic tribute to the band's transformative years upon arriving in Canada for the first time, this display captures the cultural landscape of Canada in the 1960s, and the frenzied excitement of Beatlemania that swept across the country.
