A quick peek at the next couple of weeks

🎭️ Come From Away: This popular Broadway Across Canada show about the true story of the small town that welcomed the world is making its much-anticipated return to Calgary. Sept 17-22 at the Jubilee.

📽️ The Calgary International Film Festival: Celebrating its 25th anniversary with more than 200 films, there is no shortage of new and exciting things happening this year. The Opening Gala returns to the Jack Singer Concert Hall at Arts Commons on Sept 19, featuring the Calgary-shot feature film The Thicket, produced by Calgary-based Nomadic Pictures. Sept 19-29 at various locations.

🧪 Beakerhead at Spark: This year, this popular art and science installation event is offering attendees the option of enjoying a daytime experience suited for families or exploring the event after dark with two premium night events. Sept 20-24 at The Telus Science Centre.

🎭️ The Rocky Horror Picture Show: Enjoy a screening of the original unedited movie with a live shadow cast and audience participation. Plus a costume contest, and more. Oct 16 at Macewan Hall.

📚️ Wordfest Presents Imaginarium: Savour your favourite returning authors. Sample breakout stars. Devour the intimate, inspired pairings. Relish the variety and talk shows, storytelling and poetry events, and the return of Literary Death Match. Oct 16-21 at various locations.

 📖 The Book of Mormon: Tickets are already on sale for this winner of nine Tony Awards including Best Musical. It will play a strictly limited one-week engagement presented by Broadway Across Canada. Nov 26 – Dec 1, at the Jubilee.

Happening this week and weekend

Until Nov 10 | Stage West | Assorted times

This Tony-nominated play was adapted into a film in 1982, and starred Michael Caine and Christopher Reeve and now you can catch this classic comedic thriller on the Stage West stage where you will also enjoy your buffet dinner.

Sept 14 | Heritage Park Plaza | 3-9pm

It’s your last chance of the season to shop local vendors, explore the shops in the Plaza, grab a bite to eat and be entertained at these pet-friendly night market events.

Saturday and Sunday | The Westin Hotel | 10am-5pm

Calling all cat lovers to this two-day festival where attendees can enjoy interactive activities, shop cat-themed items, experience live entertainment and learn from panel discussions while also participating in a puzzle pawlooza.

Inner City Edible Plant Walk | Tuesday | 4-6:30pm

Embark on a 2.5 hour inner city stroll with Full Circle Adventures where participants have the opportunity to learn the basics of plant identification using the five senses while connecting with the landscape. After this one, the next edible plant walk takes place on Tuesday, September 24. [$50]

Studio Bell invites Calgarians to view a documentary that gives some insight into the experience of soldiering followed by an opportunity for attendees to participate in a Q&A session. [$65]

Join YYC Beeswax for a relaxing hands-on workshop where attendees will learn how to pour their own candle into delicate tea cups for a unique finished project to take home. [$91]

Summer Movies in the Park | Thursday | 6pm

The Bridgeland-Riverside Community is hosting an evening of summer fun filled with arts, crafts, door prizes and viewings of both Disney’s Wish and The Hunger Games for families to soak up the last of the summer sun. [Free with registration]

Designed for all experience levels, this workshop teaches the basics of ink painting as they apply to creating a pet portrait where attendees will learn techniques for texture and tricks for capturing personality. [$79]

Our Fathers, Sons, Lovers and Little Brothers | Friday-Sept 28 | Various times

Dora Award-winning playwright and actor, Makambe K. Simamba, returns to Calgary to kick off Handsome Alice's season in this protest for all Black life beyond headlines and hashtags, a prayer for all families left behind, and a promise to the community that all Black lives matter. [Various prices]

Chinatown Lantern Festival | Friday | 4-11pm

Experience intricate light and lantern displays at this one-day festival featuring local vendors and food trucks where attendees can participate in dazzling traditions and community building. [Free]

The Renfrew Community Association is hosting the Wandering Souls Night Market where attendees can explore over 50 curated vendors with card readers and other spiritual services available to experience. [Free to attend]

BB4CK Gala for Giving | Friday | 6pm

Lone Star Mercedes-Benz is proud to host the annual Gala for Giving event in support of the local organization Brown Bagging for Calgary’s Kids (BB4CK) where attendees will enjoy delicious food and wine pairings along with live entertainment and prizes to be won. [$55]

Neighbourhood Food Week | Saturday | Various times

The communities of Bowness, Greenwood Village, and Montgomery gear up for a week-long celebration of free food-themed events and workshops ranging from a Food-raiser Concert to Taco Talk Panels and a Community Bake Off. [Free with registration]

2024 Eurofest Car Show | Saturday | 12-4pm

This annual car show celebrates European craftsmanship and the passion that Sheni’s Auto Trends has for working on these automotive marvels with a car show, food truck, and more to keep spectators engaged. [Free]     

Posh & Pretty Brunch Party | Saturday | 2-5pm

Indulge at this exclusive event designed to celebrate femininity and elegance with a curated brunch menu followed by a photo opportunity where attendees will receive a fascinator and gloves to accompany their dazzling outfits and create lasting memories. [$65]

Calgary: Monster Jam | Saturday and Sunday | Various times

Bringing together world-class athletes and commanding 12,000-pound trucks in a spectacular showcase of speed, skill and gravity-defying stunts, this event will delight motorsports enthusiasts at GMC Stadium.

Canadians from more than 600 communities across the country are anticipated to run, walk or bike in the annual Terry Fox Run including right here in Calgary.

Vegan Market Fall Edition | Sunday | 10:30am-3:30pm

The second annual Vegan Fall Market is happening at the Marda Loop Community Association where local vendors like Arepa Boss and Noscata have delicious vegan food items available for everyone to enjoy. [Free Admission]

The International Avenue Wheels Festival includes a free slow-ride bicycling opportunity for Calgarians to participate in, where spectators can support cyclists by walking the same path and taking in the delightfully creative art murals along the route. [Free with registration]

Join featured artists Mackenzie at the Boston Pizza located in Shawnessy for an unforgettable night of painting, good food and drinks that’s designed for all experience levels. [$40]

#YYCBlockParty | Until Sept 26 | Deerfoot City

There’s a summer long party at Deerfoot City and there’s still plenty of fun to be had! Dust off your roller skates and let the good times roll at the fourth annual #YYCBlockParty, featuring a 100-foot outdoor roller rink amongst a giant street mural—and so much more.

Fly through a technicolour nebula, kick up dust on the moon, and witness Saturn’s rings up close in this out-of-this-world immersive experience. Explore the galaxy through the James Webb telescope with this unique space exploration encounter.

Sandy and Danny may have graduated, but there is still plenty of grease to go ‘round. Head to Jubilations to enjoy the bygone days of sock hops and bobby socks, soda jerks and super nerds—and most of all—greasers. It’s that first era of rock and roll music with the songs we all know and love.

From Me to You: The Beatles in Canada 1964-1966 | Until Jan 5 | National Music Centre

A nostalgic tribute to the band's transformative years upon arriving in Canada for the first time, this display captures the cultural landscape of Canada in the 1960s, and the frenzied excitement of Beatlemania that swept across the country.
